On June 3, the captain and crew of COSCO HELLAS successfully rescued 22 crew members from the fire-damaged cargo vessel Morning Midas in the North Pacific Ocean.
While en route on its scheduled voyage between ports in China and Latin America, COSCO HELLASresponded to a distress call relayed by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Diverting from its original course, the crew located the mariners, who had abandoned their burning vessel and evacuated via lifeboat. Demonstrating professionalism and seamanship, the COSCO HELLAS team conducted a safe and efficient rescue operation, bringing all 22 individuals aboard without injury.
Following the successful rescue, COSCO HELLAS resumed its voyage to its next scheduled port of call.
The U.S. Coast Guard publicly commended the rescue: “We are grateful for the selfless actions of the three nearby vessels who assisted in the response and the crew of motor vessel COSCO HELLAS, who helped save 22 lives,” said Rear Admiral Megan Dean, Commander of the Coast Guard’s Seventeenth District.
